When stand-up comedian Max is faced with an important decision about the future of his autistic son Ezra, he decides to take him on a road trip from New York to Los Angeles.

Max tells stories on stage as a stand-up comedian about his life in New Jersey, especially stories about the mess his life is currently in. After all, Max is divorced and living with his father again as a fifty-something. And then there is his son Ezra, who has been diagnosed with autism. Ezra's impulsive behavior regularly gets him into trouble and sometimes even poses a danger to himself. When a doctor insists that Ezra be sent to a special school and put on medication, his mother Jenna, who shares custody with Max, tends to agree. Not wanting to know anything about this, Max takes Ezra on an unannounced road trip across America, using his father's "borrowed" car. Destination: Los Angeles, because Max gets to perform on Jimmy Kimmel's talk show.
