The Langstraat is characterized by a unique landscape. On the north side, the area is cut off by the dikes & clay soil of the Bergsche Maas, while about 10 kilometers south of this is one of the most extensive drift sand areas in Western Europe: De Loonse en Drunense Duinen. Are you a peace and quiet seeker? Then pay a visit to the smaller nature reserves, such as the Vlijmens Ven, De Moerputten, the Baardwijkse Overlaat, Natuurgebied Langstraat and Huis ter Heide.

De Loonse en Drunense Duinen
De Loonse en Drunense Duinen
National Park De Loonse en Drunense Duinen is also called the Brabant Sahara. The area is over 7,000 soccer fields in size. You will find huge sand flats, ponds, purple moors, forests and the unique Plantloon estate. There is something for everyone. Natuurpoort manege Van Loon in Loon op Zand and Herberg De Drie Linden in Giersbergen are a great starting point to discover nature.

Huis ter Heide
Landgoed Huis ter Heide, located between Loon op Zand and De Moer, is a hidden gem. You can go for lovely walks in this watery bird paradise, while admiring the noisy frogs and colorful dragonflies. You can also come face to face with Scottish Highlanders, who continue to feed imperturbably. You won't get any closer to nature than this. There are beautiful hiking trails in the area, ranging from 4.5 to 8 kilometers.

Langstraat Nature Reserve
Natuurgebied Langstraat, located between Waalwijk and Waspik, lies on the transition from sand to clay, called the "Naad van Brabant. The distinctive feature of the nature area is the Slagen landscape, with its narrow parcels of land, fringed with alder hedges. The areas Den Dulver, De Dullaart, De Hoeven, De Dellen and the Labbegat together form the nature reserve.

Baardwijkse Overlaat
The Baardwijkse Overlaat, located between Waalwijk and Drunen, was formerly used to allow water to flow into the spillway when water levels in the Meuse River were high. This prevented dike breaches elsewhere. There is a 5 kilometer long scenic walking route from the Eindstraat in Drunen, over the Leidijk, the Heidijk, the Zomerkade, the Kanaaldijk and the Spoordijk, which also leads past De Lange- or Nieuwe Wiel.

Ring dike of Heusden
Around the municipality of Heusden runs a 35 kilometer long medieval ring dike, with names such as Vlijmense Dijk, Molenhoek, Voordijk, Inlaagdijk, Oude Haven, Hoge Maasdijk, Maasdijk, Zeedijk, Meerdijk and Heidijk, which had to protect the inhabitants from the floods of the Meuse River. Most of this ring dike is more than 700 years old. A beautiful hiking and biking trail runs across the dikes.

The Fortress
The Fortress
De Veste is a 2 hectare area is located between Waspik and Waspik-Zuid in the polder 'Klein Waspik'. It lies south of the former Langstraat railroad line, now the 'Halve Zolenpad'. Besides natural and recreational value, the area also has a cultural-historical value, because part of the Zuiderwaterliniehas been located here.

The Swamps
The Swamps
The Moerputten is one of the few remaining low moor swamps in the southern Netherlands. The most striking feature of this area is the railroad bridge that cuts through the bog. Now no trains run there anymore, but you can take a beautiful walk: via the restored 600-meter-long bog wells (railroad) bridge and the wooden bog bridges. Accessible from the Venkantbrug bridge on the Heidijk in Vlijmen.

Mounds and the Meuse River
In times of extreme high water, the Bergsche Maas is a threat to villages and towns along the river from Geertruidenberg to 's Hertogenbosch. Water Board Brabantse Delta, government and residents have worked together to create room for the river in the Overdiepse Polder to prevent flooding. The farms in this area have been placed on mounds. Accessible from the Overdiepsekade in Waspik.

Vlijmens Ven
Vlijmens Ven
Walk or bike along the Heidijk in Vlijmen along Vlijmens Ven, the nature reserve with the most species-rich plant record ever observed in the Netherlands. Blue grassland and the protected butterfly 'pimpernelblauwtje' find their home here. There is a lookout point in the shape of a peat ship, from where you have a magnificent view of a seepage wetland with fields, grasslands and forest.
