Picture a North Sea fishing town, sometime in the 1900s. Life was simple, easy and in many families there was little to no money to spend. Ship owner Bos wants Kniertje's son Barend to work on the fishing boat the "Op Hoop van Zegen," but Barend doesn't want to. He is afraid. Afraid that like his father and 2 of his brothers, he will drown at sea.

Fishing boat in 1900Barend has a brother, Geert. Geert was in prison for a while, but is free again. He does want to go out to sea. But Bos is not in the mood for troublemakers on board. In the end, both of Kniertje's sons must go with the "Op Hoop van Zegen. But there are rumors going around, is the ship all right? Should the ship sink, it is well insured, so there is no problem for shipowner Bos. But then the men encounter a heavy storm at sea. How will they fare?
