Urinetown

After the highly successful performances of All Shook Up (2022), The Full Monty (2023) and 3 Musketeers (2024), the large and very talented 30+ cast of Musical Group M-Workx now goes for the intriguing and hilarious musical Urinetown!

The direction and choreography is again in the trusted and very expert hands of Aukje Nieuwenhuijze and Ruud Verkoeijen is again the musical director regarding the vocals and the live orchestra.

Urinetown is a 2001 satirical comedy musical of American origin. Besides the humorous elaboration of the screenplay and songs, the musical contains numerous funny references to existing musicals, such as Chicago, West Side Story and especially Les Misérables. The original idea for this musical came about when the writer Greg Kotis was traveling through Europe as a student in the 1990s and noticed that it was common in Europe to pay to use public toilets. From Oct. 15, 2010 through March 13, 2011, the musical was seen in the Netherlands in 60 theaters nationwide.

The story

Urinetown is a story about greed, corruption, love and revolution. With cabaret-like influences and snatches of cabaret, this performance takes both politics and the musical genre to task. Urinetown also deals with social and everyday issues that affect us all. Current events teach us that drinking water is becoming increasingly scarce, so the writer seems to have possibly had foresight....

Urinetown tells the story of a drab town where water is effectively scarce. Private toilets are banned and the evil company that runs the toilets thrives by charging sky-high entrance fees. The wealthy director, Reinhard W. Kleinhard, wants to make as much money as possible from his plastaks. Urinating is either expensive or dangerous, because if you refuse to pay, you will be immediately carted off to Urinetown without pardon and never heard from again.

Resident Bobbie Gold has had enough and urges the people to revolt. But the situation then gets complicated when he falls in love with Lot, the daughter of the rich principal. This leads to unusual situations, but whether it will be a resounding victory for the residents or the director remains very much to be seen....
