Based on Claire Keegan's bestseller of the same name, Small Things Like These is set in Ireland during the 1980s. The small port town where coal merchant Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy) lives is controlled by the Catholic Church. As the man works hard to support his family, he discovers disturbing secrets in a disciplinary home run by the Catholic Magdalene nuns led by Sister Mary (Emily Watson). Here, "fallen" women and girls are exploited and mistreated in the laundries. The revelations also confront Furlong with his own past and force him to break his silence.
