Sympathetic multicultural comedy about children and grandchildren of first-generation Turkish guest workers in Germany.

Little Cenk doesn't think he belongs anywhere. Not with children in his class, who, like his mother, are German. But also not with his father's Turkish family. To comfort him, Aunt Canan tells how Grandpa Hüseyin came to Germany as a guest worker in the 1960s, to "Almanya." He could have been the millionth migrant worker, were it not for the fact that he was ahead of a Mexican in the queue. In Germany, Hüseyin was then amazed by all the blond giants living there.

Fortunately, he would only stay there for a short time, among all those infidels.

Things turned out differently. In time, Hüseyin had his family flown over, and 24 years later, the Yilmaz family still lives there. But haven't they renounced their ties to Turkey too much? Grandpa Hüseyin, now seventy, wants to fly to Turkey with the whole family to fix up the house he bought there. The rest of the family doesn't like it. A heated discussion ensues, focusing on the same question Cenk asked: Where does the Yilmaz family really belong? To the Germans or to the Turks? The family hopes to find the answer to that question during a road trip in Turkey.

Almanya does not downplay the migration problems, but shows that there is also plenty to laugh at. This is also why the film is a big crowd pleaser in Germany.
