Exhibition stores and restaurants of the past
After the successful exhibition 'Street scene Geertruidenberg Years 1950 / 1960, there is now an exhibition about the many stores, cafes, bars and restaurants that Geertruidenberg had.
Soon after the Second World War, a large part of the then middle class left Geertruidenberg due to increasing vacancy in and around the market and the departure of inhabitants.
After the arrival of the PNEM, Industrial estates Dombosch I and II, the number of inhabitants in Geertruidenberg increased substantially again, offering new opportunities for entrepreneurs. Also the many soldiers of the Pontonnier barracks 'Keizersdijk' sought their entertainment in the city.
Eventually, from 1970 to 2010, Geertruidenberg had a large number of stores, cafes and bars in and around the market square.
Together with cinema 'Centraal', Geertruidenberg had a rich nightlife.
However, the competition from Raamsdonksveer and Oosterhout (e.g. Arendshof) put great pressure on the existence of the middle class in Geertruidenberg.
