Monumental showdown in minimalist dance
This is what every dance lover is looking forward to: the monumental dance performance "Typhoon" (1986) by Krisztina de Châtel, the queen of minimalist dance, is being revived. For this choreography, she collaborated with visual artist Peter Vermeulen. He came up with three wind machines, which can vary in strength from a light breeze to a considerable storm. In a windless prologue the Introdans dancers prepare themselves for what is to come, accompanied by the piano sounds of Simeon ten Holt's 'Canto Ostinato'. They hang out of tune as if leaning against the wind. Their arms cleave through the air. They are ready for battle. Then the swelling roar of the wind machines drowns out the soft piano sounds: the dancers fill their lungs and engage in battle with the (invisible) matter, which they make tangible while dancing. De Châtel's choreographic ordering urge is tested in this performance, as it were, in a flying storm.
