Advent: looking forward to the light
Advent, the four weeks leading up to Christmas, symbolizes hope, light, and expectation. Thus we live towards the light that is coming. St. John's also contributes to this. It is an annual tradition that from mid-December to the end of January the nativity scene is on display in the Waalwijk domed church. Numerous visitors from far and wide know the way to the beautiful nativity scene each year and also come to light a candle.
Nativity scene and wishing tree
In the dark days before Christmas, the nativity scene comes into its own. This year a nativity scene in St. John's will be decorated with an artistic teak sculpture group almost 70 years old, designed and crafted by renowned artist Jan van Eijl (1926-1996). The beautiful wooden sculptures together with the floating angels above the nativity scene and the beautifully designed Star of Bethlehem make the nativity scene into an atmospheric whole that fits beautifully with the mystical atmosphere in St. John's.
At the nativity scene there is again a wishing tree in which anyone who wants to can place their personal intention or Christmas wish. For the children, coloring sheets are available. Everyone is welcome to visit the beautiful crib and the beautifully lit and decorated church from Wednesday, December 11. The nativity scene can be viewed until the end of January.
Apart from the celebrations and regular opening hours from Wednesday to Sunday from 13.30 - 16.30 hours, the church is also open on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and on New Year's Day at noon. On Boxing Day, around 3 p.m. there will be the traditional "Crib Crib" to which all parents and grandparents with their children and grandchildren are cordially invited. The church will also undoubtedly be busy again during the Christmas celebrations and during the scheduled Christmas and New Year's concerts. The concert program can be found at www.vriendensintjanwaalwijk.nl.
