A Splendid Lack tells the compelling story of Lucia, the first and greatest love of womanizer Giacomo Casanova. After an enchanting encounter in Italy, the two promise each other eternal fidelity while awaiting Casanova's return from a business trip. But then Lucia is stricken with smallpox and closes herself off from her lover, and from the outside world. Sixteen years later, when she has reinvented herself as the mysterious and veiled courtesan Galathée, they meet again in Amsterdam. Without showing her face, Lucia and Casanova once again fall for each other. As their love blossoms again, Lucia must make a decision; does she dare to drop her mask and reveal her true identity?
The film is based on Arthur Japin's bestseller of the same name, which was a huge success with a 72nd printing and translations in as many as 22 countries. Japin also co-wrote the English-language screenplay himself. Director Michiel van Erp (Stromboli, Nobody in the City) brings the story to life with Maarten Heijmans, Jonah Hauer-King and Dar Zuzovsky on the big screen.
