Honest stories about motherhood today, relatable, raw and with self-mockery
It is often assumed that a "real" woman is also a "real" mother. Women are said to have a "maternal instinct" that makes them know they want children and how to care for them. But is that really the case? In "The Mother Monologues," three actresses present ten monologues about motherhood today: humorous, raw, activist and with much needed self-mockery. Stories about the struggles, taboos and sharp edges of motherhood. About things you sometimes think, but are afraid to say out loud. About loving your child, but not being a mother. That you hoped your child would be different than it is. That it makes you insecure or very angry. But that you don't say it because you are afraid of being the only one. 'The Mother Monologues' will be a celebration of recognition and acknowledgement, for mothers, non-mothers, fathers and others. Because being, becoming or perhaps never becoming a mother is not just something.
'The monologues are alternately funny, sharp, sensitive or a combination and were written by Evenhuis and Reijnders, as well as by others: Claudia de Breij, Nadja Hüpscher and Stella Bergsma contributed texts.' Theater newspaper
'The wide selection ensures that everyone will identify with something and certain taboos are broken open.' Theater newspaper
