Lecture Twan van der Steen in the House of Waalwijk

Sorry, this event is no longer available

'The secret of the shell'. An interactive lecture by Baardwijker Twan van der Steen about his 3.5 months (2,400 km) long walk from home to Santiago de Compostella deep into Spain and beyond.
In this interactive lecture, Twan, son of deceased pilgrim Antoon van der Steen, will try to explain why this ancient pilgrimage path calls to many. After all, what is the magical attraction of Compostella?

Twan set out with only a backpack (with the famous scallop) a pilgrim's passport and the route on his phone. He barely mastered the French language, let alone Spanish. Still, everything worked out.

After many weeks of walking, through forests, villages, towns, over peaks and valleys and sleeping with many hospitable families and in monasteries, Twan began to wonder if he was now on his way to Compostella or to himself!

Don't expect an a to z travel story at this lecture but more of a philosophical reflection focusing on:
- Reasons why people from around the world go to Santiago;
- Physical trials;
- Encounters;
- Dealing with loneliness;
- Fascinating pasts;
- Does walking to Santiago change you?

Twan's lecture will also focus on the history of the journey to Santiago de Compostella.
The lecture is suitable for anyone who enjoys walking, is interested in European cultural history and/or has plans to walk a pilgrimage themselves.

The lecture will be musically supported by Geert-Jan Dussel: he will sing some pilgrim songs including the famous Ultreia.
