Exhibition: 'The Muses - A Dutch Approach'
DISCOVER THE NINE MODERN MUSES | Last Friday, January 3, artist Cees Akerboom opened his special exhibition inspired by Greek mythology in the museum café of Het Gouverneurshuis.
Cees' fascination with the nine muses, the goddesses of art and science, began as early as 1968 when, as a high school student, he had to memorize the first sentences of Homer's Odyssey. His love of classical antiquity took him to Greece in 1979, where he visited Mount Helikon - the mythical inspiration of the muses.
For this exhibition, Cees gave the classical muses a modern twist. He translated the nine goddesses into nine contemporary inspirational women. Each painting is imbued with mystery and enriched with a unique object, a dot tattoo as well as a poem in a modern context, preserving the essence of their role as inspiration.
