Attention stone old monastery proverb trail
In 1396, Paulus van Haestrecht had a peat canal constructed. This allowed boats to bring the blocks of peat quickly to 's-Hertogenbosch. Paulus was the lord of Loon op Zand and thus the owner of the land. He charged toll (money) to the boats, and so a profitable trade in peat developed. He did not collect that money himself: he had the farmers he had living along the shipping route do it.
When the peat ran out, peat shipping was closed in 1642. Even after that, this place remained very important. Where the nursing home now stands, a convent and a nuns' school were built. The brothers and nuns who lived here took care of the elderly and taught at the Theresiaschool.
