Old guard post
Along the Crescent Trail there were no less than 41 sentry posts at the crossings between track and road. The sentry posts were inhabited by NS personnel whose job was to monitor the route and warn in time if a train was approaching. Then the railroad barriers were turned down by hand or traffic was stopped by hand.
The architecture of the railroad guard houses was almost identical everywhere. They were easily recognizable by the overhanging gable roof and decorative brickwork in the facades.
Living in a house offered by the Dutch Railways was subject to rules. For example, the plants around the house were not allowed to be higher than 60 cm, in connection with a good view of the railroad. Also, nothing was allowed to be changed inside or outside. When the chief supervisor of the route came to check everything looked spick and span. The supervisor even checked the gutters.
