Cattle Market (1516-1935)

Waalwijk has had annual fairs since 1303. From 1516 there were weekly markets, which were held in the "Cloostersteeg" ( now Stationsstraat, Sint-Antoniusstraat and Kloosterweg). This was a dirt road to the south, of great importance to the Waalwijk economy, especially because of the very busy annual and weekly markets. On market days (around 1765) sometimes hundreds of carts per day came through the "Cloostersteeg". Around 1900 it went downhill with the cattle markets, in the 1930s the curtain gradually fell. In the photo, cows and calves stand behind a fence on the east side of the street, behind which are farmers and traders. The four smaller houses and the large building next to them belonged to the Dekkers family, these were bought in 1930 by Harrie Sanders to build his Cunen store on that spot.
