Proverbial route - House with the golden crown
What a beautiful house this is! It takes the crown (literally)! Just look up, there you see a golden crown. To span means to measure. So a person could "span himself the crown" and say he was king. Meanwhile, the expression means "something that surpasses everything. This house surpasses other houses in terms of its beautiful facade: it spans the crown!
A winding alley
To the left of the house with the crown is a narrow alley. Such alleys are typical of Heusden; they are not straight, but winding. Thus the soldiers who protected the town could easily escape into it! If the enemy fired on them, they could no longer be seen and hit after the twist, just like at the Wijkse Poort (stop 9)!
