Hugo de Groot walking route stage 2
It is now more than 400 years since Hugo de Groot escaped from Slot Loevestein via a book chest. Follow in the footsteps of Hugo de Groot and walk (part of) the route he took when he fled from Gorinchem to Antwerp.
Hugo de Groot, accompanied by his maid Elsje van Houweningen, was smuggled in the book chest to Gorinchem. Hugo walked around 12:00 dressed as a bricklayer from Gorinchem via the Land van Altena in the direction of Waalwijk. From there he left for Antwerp on the cart of a Waalwijk drayman. Hugo de Groot probably traveled from Waalwijk to Antwerp via Loon op Zand, Tilburg, Riel, Alphen, Baarle, Hoogstraten, Sint-Lenaarts, Sint-Job-In-'t-Goor and Merksem.
