Strategically located on the river Maas, fortified town Heusden was an important link between the city of 's-Hertogenbosch and nature reserve De Biesbosch. For protection, Heusden was one of the first Dutch cities to be equipped with a city wall. After 1968, the fortified town underwent large-scale restoration that preserved much of its history. The restorations earned Heusden the prestigious Europa Nostra restoration award.

- The three Standerd mills near the city harbor
On the ramparts of Heusden, on the side of Bergsche Maas, there are a total of three windmills. In times of siege, the mills ensured that the town was self-sufficient. Every year on National Mills Day the mills turn and millers tell more about this craft. The mills can be visited throughout the year by appointment. - Governor's House
Dating from 1592, the Governor's House is one of the most beautiful buildings in the fortress. It was once the parsonage of the N.H. Church and later became the official residence of the governor of the fortress of Heusden. Now the Governor's House is the place that brings the history of Heusden and its surroundings to life with its own permanent collection and surprising temporary exhibitions. And in the museum café or the walled Governor's Garden you can enjoy a cup of coffee, light lunch or a good glass of wine. - Heemtuin de Meulenwerf
It is where the city farm and kitchen gardens used to be, a place under the embankment near the river Meuse. It is an ideal location to connect past and present, nature and culture, and to discover and enjoy together here. Every season has its charm in the Heemtuin. Access is via the Molenstraat or end of Waterpoort (free of charge).
