Bicycle route Overdiepse Polder and Bergsche Maas
Thanks to the bicycle junction network, you can very easily travel the most beautiful routes, such as this route along the Bergsche Maas. Just follow the posts/signs with node numbers.
This bike route goes largely along the Bergsche Maas, a 24.5-kilometer long dug river. Where the course of the Bergsche Maas deviated from its original bed, three watercourses remain known as Oude Maasje. This was done to prevent drastic changes in the drainage of the surrounding polders, which traditionally drained into the Oude Maasje.
Because the Bergsche Maas posed a serious threat to the villages and towns in its vicinity (the area between Geertruidenberg and 's-Hertogenbosch) during (extreme) high water levels, a water storage area was created in the Overdiepse Polder in Waspik. At high water levels, the river can "park" excess water in this polder, keeping four million inhabitants' feet dry.
