Zuiderwaterlinie stage 11
The Zuiderwaterlinie is not only the oldest and most used water lines in the Netherlands, but also the longest. With this 11th stage you will walk part of the way along the Zuidwaterlinie.
The stage starts in Waalwijk. Through the bustling center of this city you walk towards the Baardwijkse Overlaat, a nature reserve of over 48 hectares. The area was originally used to hold the water of the river Maas at high tide. You then walk along the Heidijk, Molensteeg and Zeedijk towards Bergsche Maas and via there to the fortified town of Heusden. Here stood one of the first moated castles of northwestern Europe around which the city was eventually built. Heusden was one of the first Dutch cities to get a city wall. Fortunately, thanks to large-scale restorations, much of the old Heusden has been preserved.
After going around and through Heusden, the stage ends in Hedikhuizen.
