Steam shoe factory J.A. Ligtenberg was established in1881 and manufactured sea boots, lace leather work boots and plush slippers. The factory was taken over by three brothers in 1931. In addition to shoes under the JAL brand, boys' and men's shoes under the Cowboy brand were also produced here.
Liesbeth Ligtenberg was born above the office of Schoenfabriek J.A. Ligtenberg. On her 13th birthday July 27, 1967, a fire destroyed the Pannekoekhal, part of Schoenfabriek J.A. Ligtenberg. A dramatic event. Even neighbor boy Jos Baijens, himself employed in this factory, remembers the huge fire. Fortunately no one died, but the factory was never rebuilt afterwards. The JAL continued to operate and closed its doors in 1983.
