The library used to be seen as an information point and a place to borrow books. With the emergence of the Internet, that first function became less important and people went to the library primarily to borrow books for recreation. In recent years, the library has been transformed from a traditional library to a social, educational library. Meanwhile, the information function is more important than ever and can remain tremendously relevant to residents and visitors.
There used to be a total of three libraries in the municipality, one in each core. Now the three libraries have merged into one large library in Raamsdonksveer.
Today the library is a meeting place accessible to everyone. You do not have to be a member to use the library.
Promoting reading and reading pleasure are still important and this is also reflected in the activities they organize, such as Voorleespret for young children. You can participate in all the activities organized without being a member of the library. A few workshops cost money but most are free.
Theek 5 also organizes digital courses such as 'Klik en Tik' (learning to use the computer and internet), 'simple internet' and 'Working with the digital government', which they call DigiSterker. In the larger branches such as the branch in Raamsdonksveer there is an IDO, Information Point Digital Government. Anyone can come here with questions about digital government. Examples include help with applying for your DigiD.
Theek 5 also has an Discovery Lab. Here they organize workshops for children in grades five through eight that focus on technology. For example, they get to work with 3D printers or the children can make their own robot. In this way, they want to enthuse children about technology.
They also deal a lot with low literacy. For this they have a Digi-Language House. Here language volunteers help people who have difficulty with the Dutch language.
Furthermore, they regularly organize language workshops for children, workshops on media wisdom and a Children's College, where adults come and tell something about their profession to enthuse and inform children.
There are also external parties present in the library such as the Play-o-theek, the client point of Thuisvester, the housing corporation, and the Service point Volunteers of Trema/WOG.
All this makes the library still very relevant. The book lending function is still there but the service has become much broader.
The name of Theek 5 came about through a competition. The 5 in the name stands for the library's five core values.
- The library as a warehouse of knowledge and information
- The library as a center for development and education
- The library as encyclopedia of art and culture
- The library as a source of inspiration for reading and literature
- The library as a stage for meeting and debate
From the above story, we can see that Theek 5 dedicates itself to great purposes. Are you visiting our community? Then be sure to visit Theek 5!
