The Kruithuis
The Kruithuis was built in 1836 to replace the previous one, which was demolished in 1816. That it is a powder house can be seen from the end wall. You can clearly see the round barrel vault one meter thick. The gunpowder had to be stored safely. The building is in fact a large above-ground basement. During the Second World War, the building served as a public shelter for residents of Elisabeth Street.
