Attention stone - Waalwijk town hall
Waalwijk Town Hall (1855-1932)
The great city fire of 1824 destroyed the old city hall (being the Gasthuiskapel that stood at the level of Grotestraat 341). Due to lack of finances, the city council decided only in 1854 to purchase and remodel a property, beer brewery "De Roode Leeuw" owned by the Hoffmans family. The little tower on the roof and the new facade, equipped with a capitol entrance, provided the building with a dignified appearance. The clock was added later. From January 1, 1855 until October 22, 1932, it served as a town hall and district court. In 1856, the brewery behind the town hall was demolished. After remodeling, the town hall also housed: a gendarmerie barracks, house of detention with six jail cells, jailer's and constable's house, police room and a hall for the newly established drawing school. In 1933, the building was demolished.
