Villa Castellanie
This location is part of the "Walking in Historic Loon op Zand' route.
From 1900 to 1901, this villa was built in English country house style. Architect was Theodorus Smeele, who was mayor of Waalwijk from 1907 to 1923. Clients and first residents were Sidonie Borret and her mother Mrs. Sophia Borret-Verheijen. Sidonie Borret continued to live there until her death in 1927. After that, the villa was occupied by other families. From 1967 to 1970 it housed the Convict Saint Augustine of the Fathers of the Lateran Congregation with resident students. From 1970 to 1982, the villa was home to the elderly members of the Sisters of the Cenacle. From 1982 to 2000, a hotel-restaurant was operated here. In 2001 and 2012, the villa received new owners.
In the villa's backyard and on the site of the former tannery Hollandia, new housing and apartments were built between 2007 and 2009.
