High Steenweg 15/17
This location is part of the "Walking in Historic Loon op Zand' route.
Behind the residential house Hoge Steenweg 15, a municipal monument, is a red brick building. This is a former tannery.
After the heavy shelling during the liberation of the village on October 27 and 28, 1944, the church was a havoc. The pastor had to look for an emergency facility and thought of this mothballed tannery. From November 5, 1944 to May 19, 1945, the tannery served as an emergency church. After the Germans requisitioned the boys' school on Van Rijckevorselstraat, the attic and the leather warehouse served as an emergency school.
