Fishing has been an important source of income for Geertruidenberg for centuries. Its heyday was between 1421 and 1800. Salmon, sturgeon and shad were exported far beyond the borders. Along the streets, live fish is sold from baskets and stalls. There is also a fish hall, first on Havendijkstraat, and from 1772 on Vismarktstraat, designed by architect Philips Willem Schonk. The stone elements are by stonemason Guilliam Carrier. On the turret of the mansard roof is a wind vane with the image of a salmon.
