The Wijkerzand in Wijk en Aalburg
Along the Maasdijk in Wijk en Aalburg lies the Wijkerzand, a floodplain of about 70 hectares with both scenic and historical significance. All the inhabitants of Wijk who were born and raised there collectively own this area. In the land register they are still called "natives. In 1815, Philips of Burgundy donated the area to the natives because they prevented it from falling to the municipality for the construction of a brick factory. District residents receive an annual share of the proceeds from the use of the floodplain, where mostly cows graze. This joint ownership makes the Wijkerzand a special and historically valuable area to visit.
