Tomb of Jan Claessen in Andel
In the cemetery near the striking Romboutstoren tower in Andel lies the grave of Jan Claessen. According to legend, he was the famous trumpeter from Prince William of Orange's army, sung about by Rob de Nijs. Whether this is true, no one knows for sure, but the legend lives on. The restored tombstone records that Jan Claessen from Andel was killed by an assassin from Breda on October 5, 1634. The little chapel near the tower, nowadays "the house of Jan Claessen," is an interesting place to visit and take a moment to reflect on this historical figure.
