In 1891 there were 82 active tanneries in Dongen. In 1982 there were only two of these left of which Fr. v.d. Assum Overlederfabriek. They tanned in the Heuvelpark. The hides were hung in the adjacent river Dongen to soak off the hairs, after which the skin was scraped off and the leather could be tanned. Now there is still a small tannery in use in the authentic Heuvelpark. Here only post-tanning and finishing takes place. The Heuvelpark is managed by the 12th generation of the Van den Assum family. Now mainly as a hotbed of many creative businesses.
