A cow (left) and an ox (right) flank the steps leading to the landing at the entrance to the now former Waalwijk Town Hall, inaugurated in 1932. These statues by sculptor Lambertus Zijl symbolize the connection that Waalwijk, as the center of the Dutch leather and shoe industry, has traditionally had with animal husbandry and leather.

All the structures on and in Council House Square were designed by architect Alexander Kropholler, and the entire complex, also called the Kropholler Ensemble, has been a national monument since 2001.

In 2010, the municipality moved to the new "City Hall at Winterdijk." A foundation established in 2013 then took on the task of organizing arts and cultural events and gatherings in the former town hall, renamed the "House of Waalwijk."
