In nature reserve Huis ter Heide Scottish Highlanders are used to keep the vegetation in balance. You may encounter these long-haired grazers just along your path. Despite their gentle nature and cute appearance, Scottish Highlanders are not keen on a direct confrontation with people (and their four-legged friends). Appropriate distance (at least 25 meters) is therefore very important. Walk around them in a wide arc, straight through the woods if necessary when the herd is on the path. Never cross a herd and keep dogs on a leash. If you see a nursing Scottish Highlander with a calf, keep in mind that the protective mother instinctively reacts faster and more fiercely to a threatened situation.

Don't let the above rules deter you from hiking in estate Huis ter Heide, near amusement park the Efteling,. With common sense and respect for the animals, you will undoubtedly enjoy the versatility of this nature reserve.
